Guide Services

Taylor Streit cut his teeth fly fishing the mountain streams and rivers of New York before moving to Taos in the 1960's.  Already an accomplished angler, Taylor was amazed by the  endless fishing opportunities of the southern rockies.  He began guiding in the 70's and started the Taos Fly Shop in 1980.  Today, Taylor spends most of his time writing and exploring new waters. His son Nick now runs the operation and is Taos Fly Shop's head guide.  The Streit's have a staff of experienced guides that are among some of the best in the Rocky Mountains.

New Mexico Season; New Mexico is blessed with a longer window of good trout fishing than more northern states. Some years--when conditions are right--a spectacular caddis hatch occurs on the Rio Grande in April. During runoff (May into June) stream fishing is very good on a couple of tail water streams, and Eagle Nest Lake near Angel Fire is excellent for big rainbows. By mid-June all streams are in great condition and the best hatches of the year can be expected. This is prime time for the Chama area and the truly fabulous private water of the upper Brazos. The Rio Grande generally fishes best Sept - Nov but is great all summer in dry years. During the winter, the lower Red River fishes well as it is a spring fed stream. It is the main spawning grounds for both rainbow and brown trout of the Rio Grande. When planning a ski trip set aside a day to fish the lower Red, as there is nothing like seeing rising trout in front of a snow bank! We often fish for trout a half day in winter and then try for pike in the Rio Grande in the afternoon.

Taos Fly Shop is permitted to guide on the Carson National Forest, Rio Grande del Norte Natinal Monumnet (BLM), Eagle Nest Lake State Park, Cimarron Canyon State park, Heron Lake State Park, Navajo Lake State Park, Colorado Outfitter number 2604.  We have private acess on the Chama, Brazos, Rio Grande, Conejos rivers and ponds on the Hollenback ranch.
